We have a big announcement that will hopefully help make your life easier and some exciting updated trainings for you to attend!

Drumroll please... for our new WYSIWYG editor!

After testing out a new and improved editing interface in our newsletter module, we have officially released the new WYSIWYG to every module in your Tendenci website.

You should recognize the editing tools, as they are quite similar to our former editing interface. Need a bit of guidance? No problem, check out this WYSIWYG icon help file here.

Tell us what you think about it on our Get Satisfaction site, where you can connect with other Tendenci users, make your own feature and usability suggestions - as well as keep in touch with our team's updates.

Updated Newsletter editor

Our Tendenci team pushed out a new and improved newsletter interface to help make your newsletter email communications even easier. Some of the updated functionality includes:

More powerful image uploader and manager
Spell check!!
Collapsible toolbar
Find and replace functionality for your text
Maximize your editing area to minimize scrolling

We hope you love it as much as we do! If you'd like to go back to the original newsletter editor while you are still adjusting, have no fear - switching back is fast and easy.

We will be updating ALL of our Tendenci editors with this WYSIWYG / editor interface in the next month, so be sure to let us know what you think!

Site Settings updates for your Tendenci site coming soon!

Happy 2009! We're starting this year off with a bang and we wanted to give you the scoop. We're about to roll out some Tendenci updates that will give you even more control over your organization's Web site.

Here are just a few of the things you get to look forward to :

We've redesigned your site settings. Now you can more easily enable and disable features per module. We have a much nicer interface, reorganized the settings so that you can navigate to them directly from the module you're on, and we even managed to make the settings page a little bit faster.
Turn on/off Tendenci Modules - don't use all of the Tendenci functionality on your Web site? Now you can have us turn 'off' the modules you don't use. This will help streamline your Web site.
Turn on/off Tendenci tabs - not wanting Tendenci navigational tabs to appear on your site? Your unwanted tabs' days are numbered...

These updates have already been applied to all development sites and will be coming to your live Web site Thursday, January 8th.

Site Settings Improvements Coming Soon!

Schipul programmers are diligently working on improving the usability of Site Settings, also known as Site XML Variables.

In early January, look for improvements in the site interface and usability, including:

Settings organized into categories by module
Less technical, more user-friendly names and descriptions
Faster and easier usability for editing your site’s settings

Calendar Events Updates Coming Soon!

Great news! Thanks to recent client funding, we are now working to revamp the Calendar Events Module to make it an even more valuable resource for you. Look for updates to be made to the Calendar Events Module by the beginning of the year.

Improvements to be made, such as streamlining the event registration process, will make the module more efficient for you and your clients to use.

Here is a brand new help file on Adding an Embedded Flash MP3 Player:

You can add an embedded Flash MP3 player to an Article or CMS page in your Tendenci website by using the 1 Pixel Out Audio Player.

You will need:

The Player
The Mp3
The HTML embed code

Steps:

Upload the player.swf to the files module in your Tendenci website by going to yourwebsite.com/en/files
Copy the file path that is provided to you once the player has been uploaded
Create/View an Article or CMS page that you would like to add the embedded flash player to
Upload the MP3 to your page by clicking More Options and selecting Upload a File Copy the file path that is provided to you once the audio file has been uploaded
Edit the page and copy and paste the HTML embed code in the WYSIWYG while under the HTML view
Update the files names in the embed code for the player as well as the audio file with the file paths that you previously copied
Hit Submit
Test your player

Tendenci User Conference 2009 date coming soon!

Plans are already underway for the 2nd annual Tendenci User Conference 2009. Look for the date to be announced by the end of January.

The Tendenci User Conference is a great place to learn more about the functionality of the software as well as connect with other users to learn how their organizations are using Tendenci to drive their Web sites.

We want to hear from you! Tendenci Users are the heart of the conference, so your suggestions and recommendations are welcome. We'd like to thank all of you for your thoughts and well wishes during the past few days as our team has been dealing with Hurricane Ike and its aftermath. The Schipul gang is all safe and accounted for and VERY happy to be back at the (air conditioned) office.

We were very blessed to be able to return to a full functioning and undamaged office building. We have electricity, AC and Internet access -- with a handful of empty desks and offices to share! If you are in the Houston area and need a place to set up shop for a while, please let us know.

Tendenci User Conference 2008 canceled

Due to the hit our hometown of Houston took from Hurricane Ike, we are canceling the upcoming October 2nd - 3rd Tendenci User Conference 2008.

It was a tough decision, but at this time we need to use the next couple of weeks to focus on getting our Community and affected clients get back on their feet. Schipul office closed Sept 12th for Hurricane Ike - stay safe!

Hello there!

As Hurricane Ike approaches the Houston area, we are hard at work buttoning down the hatches and getting ready for a weekend of weather excitement!

The Schipul office will be closed tomorrow, Friday September 12th, as our employees will be with their families. We will have a Core Team physically in the office to handle anything that comes up.

However, we do not anticipate any Web site or email outages. You may have limited access to some development sites, but again we do not anticipate any outages.

If you have an immediate need, you can call us at the office tomorrow (281) 497.6567, ext. 0. All training and general support issues will be resolved next week when the office is back open.

Hope you had a super Labor Day! In honor of the long weekend, we have a couple of exciting things to share with you that will hopefully minimize future labor on your Tendenci-driven Web site. Specifically, the launch of our sleek new User Profile pages and the upcoming Tendenci User Conference on October 2 - 3!

Brand new User Profile look and functionality!

Have you checked out your User Profile page lately? We just pushed out a great-looking update to help simplify the layout of all your profile information.

Profile and Contacts Tabs make life easier

The sleekly re-designed User Profile page houses much of the same information you're used to seeing, but in a much more user friendly layout. Quickly find all of your invoices and training sessions, update your Web Identities, Profile photo and Emergency Response Skills literally at the click of a link.

Your new 'Contacts' tab makes it easier for you to keep an eye on what your site contacts are up to online. Search through a user's contacts and connect with their site contributions, in addition to accessing their contact information.

Love our Favorites and Contributions Tabs

These are a beautiful set of pages that give you a visual way of tracking what users have marked as a 'favorite' and added content to your site. Each type of content (ie: articles, CMS pages, events, etc.) has its own unique color to help you differentiate between the most popular and frequently added kinds of content.

Get into Groups Tab

This might be what our team is most excited about with this update. Our new User Groups tab makes it really easy to add or remove yourself from Groups and looks pretty to boot! Dig through available User Groups on your site and simply click 'Join group' or 'Leave Group' to join or leave. Only interested in seeing what User Groups you are currently in? No worries, just click the 'Show My Groups' button and see your current affiliations.

In a browser window, enter your site URL and include /en after the URL.

I graduated from Tomball High School in 2001 and went on to Graduate from Houston’s own U of H with a BA in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. I love all that is Houston and never tire of telling random strangers how great Houston really is. I interned as an event planner for a year in college and interned in the marketing department at the Houston Dynamo (Forever Orange!) my entire senior year. I love to learn, to read, and the color yellow. Although I’m a self-proclaimed internet newbie who accidently tripped and fell into the Social Media world… it was love at first “site.” I’m excited to be expanding on all that I have learned up unil now and am super excited to be working with all the amazing crew at Schipul.
	Brandi Lalanne--Graphics Team As long as Schipul provides me with all of the free coffee I can handle, I will continue to make the client's websites as pretty and functional as I can. The funny thing is, drinking coffee and doing web-based work is pretty much what I do in my free time too. I think its safe to say that I love what I do.
	Mariam Tejada--Production Team Raised around numbers, languages and dancers I have naturally developed an affinity for math, foreign languages and dance. I graduated from M.B. Lamar Senior High School in Houston, TX in 2007 and currently attend Scripps College in Claremont, CA where the unofficial mascot is a squirrel. As my third summer as an intern for Schipul I am eager to keep learning about web marketing, web design, and Tendenci®.
	Rebecca Leven--Graphics Team Rebecca, better known as Becky, is a fun-loving, driven, and passionate little lady who loves to accessorize. She originally hails from New York City but has lived in Singapore, Tokyo, and Connecticut too. While not basking in the sunshine of Schipul she spends time running, cooking, and causing a ruckus. Becky currently attends Rice University where she has held various social co-ordination positions, spends ungodly amounts of time in the foreign language studies building, and is also involved in working with local African refugees. She is having the time of her life at Schipul and eating up all the new exciting knowledge as well as many of the various snacks in the Schipul kitchen.
	Jordan--Production Team Oddly enough, I spend my free time creating jewelry. I just graduated from Westchester Academy for International Studies in Houston, TX in 2008. I am on my way to attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX to be a pirate and follow the potential path of pre-med. This is my first time working as an intern for Schipul and I look forward to having many enjoyable experiences in the world of web design and marketing.

Important Tendenci Email Delivery Update

Tendenci has made an important update affecting the way that email is sent from your Web site!

The battle against Spam is an ongoing issue in the online world. It is our job to keep your Web site's emails compliant to the latest regulations to ensure that your emails are delivered to your members!

On that note, Tendenci has updated its email delivery process when sending on behalf of clients via your Web site (including newsletters, contact forms and any online notification sent from your site).

When an email from your Tendenci site is sent it will now have a Sender Address of DO-NOT-REPLY-TENDENCI@schipul.net. This change was made to match the address of your Web site's mail server to the 'Sender Email' address in order to be compliant with new email regulations.

A 'Sender Email' address that does not match the actual mail server address looks suspicious to mail servers, resulting in blocked emails or failed deliveries.

To a server this sample email header could look like Spam as it is sent with the sender's own email address from a Tendenci site's newsletter generator (@hotmail.com vs. @schipul.net):

Using the Ballots Module

The ballots module is an online voting module. It's a great way for organizations to elect office positions,or vote proposals and issues. Here are some facts about the ballots module:

The users or members will have to log in and enter their unique ballot ID in order to vote. The unique ballot ID can be used only once, so no one will be able to vote more than one time.
The unique ballot IDs will be generated and assigned to each user for the selected user group when a ballot is activated.
After a ballot is activated, it is not allowed to edit.
No one but the designated ballot editor can access the report of the voting results.
If a ballot is mailed back to the office, and offline reconciliation is enabled, an admin or the ballot editor can enter the vote online.

The process of using the ballots module:

Create a ballot ---- Activate the ballot --- Send users the Unique Ballot IDs --- Users vote online --- (Offline reconciliation if enabled) --- View the report of voting results.

Uploading a document to a CMS page

You may want to upload a document to a page on your site for viewing or downloading by your site visitors. Examples of these may include:

A technical white paper
A price list
An image
An informational flyer
An employee handbook
Any document that you do not want to convert to html and put on the site

Documents are generally uploaded as .pdf files but can be .doc or .xls or a file of another type.

To upload a document to your page:

View the page.
Click the Upload Files () icon under More Options.
Browse to the file on your network.
Check Restrict File View if you do *not* want this file to appear for download at the bottom of the page.
- If you check this option, you will need to add a link to the uploaded file within the text of the CMS page. (e.g. "Download the employee handbook")
Click Upload.

View your page and you will see the file you just uploaded at the bottom of the page.

If you checked Restrict File View, you will need to Edit the CMS page and add a link to the uploaded file. (See How to add a relative link on a CMS page)

Generating a Newsletter

Generating a professional newsletter is quick and easy with Tendenci. The software can automatically pull new site content into a graphically-rich framework to get you started. You then review, edit and send! From the Tendenci console, click Newsletter Generator under the Admin Quick Links section. Choose the User Group to receive the newsletter. Include Jump Links to have an index automatically created at the top of your newsletter. Include or Skip categories of content to be pulled to the newsletter. Choose which Template you would like to use (click the name of the Template to preview it) Click Submit. Click View Email to review the newsletter as it will go out. Close this window when done viewing. Click Edit Email to make changes to the newsletter before sending. Close this window when done editing. Adding a link that opens a new window

When you add a link to an external source (another web site), you may want to open that link in a new window.

To add a link that opens a new window:

Add the link to your CMS page as usual. (How to add a link)
In the Add/Edit Link properties box, click the Target tab and choose New Window from the Target dropdown.
Click OK.

Test your link to double-check your work!

Editing my site's Meta Information

Tendenci software automatically creates Meta information for every page of your site. However, to better optimize your site for search engines you may want to customize the information yourself. To edit a pages Meta Information (This only allows you to make changes to CMS pages, this icon does not appear on non CMS pages ex. Articles): Go to that particular page on your site. Select the icon (under More Options). (Note: To edit the Meta Information on your homepage, click on the ^ icon and then change the CMID at the end of the URL to =1) You will see a page that includes several fields of Meta information such as: Page Title - This will determine what appears on the top bar of a web browser. Using Email Addresses To Groups

The Tendenci Email to Groups function allows admins to enter a list of email addresses and bind them to a user group.

Note - the email address *must* already be attached to a user in the database for the process to complete!

Create your User Group (see http://support.tendenci.com/en/helpfiles/v/73 for more information on creating user groups)
From the Tendenci Menu click "Manage Users" in the admin only block
Choose option E-1 "E-mail to Groups"
Paste all of the email addresses into the text area
Choose the group you are adding (or removing) the users to from the drop down menu
Choose whether to add or remove the users from the specified group
Press submit - all the email addresses that match up with a user record will be added or removed as specified from the group

This means that all content lives in a database and is displayed like regular text when someone visits the page. Here's a quick rundown of the different WYSIWYG Editor icons. To view an icon name on your screen, roll your mouse over the icon and wait a second for the mouseover text to appear. (You must actually be in Edit mode on a page to see the rollovers.) Source -- toggles between HTML source code and the WYSIWYG view Preview -- shows full document in WYSIWYG format but does not apply style sheet formatting Templates -- applies a set of formatting to a blank page. Use this before adding content as it replaces all page content with the template coding. This is an easy wasy to add a video or audio file to your page. Cut, copy and paste Paste as plain text -- pastes copied text from another location and strips all formatting codes. This is the cleanest way to add new content to your site. Uploading a file or document

From the main console go to the Files link under Other Tendenci Modules.
Now hit Add a File (search will allow you to search and view files that have been uploaded)

Please browse for the file so that it is listed in the field and hit upload.
(Important: DO NOT use spaces or caps in file names.)

Then you can have a choice to upload another file or go back to the index.
